There?s a misconception that long distance relationships are challenging and/or are a waste of time. Long distance relationships- like many things in life- are what you make them.? The beauty of a long distance relationship is it forces the couple to mentally fall in love with each other. When you?re face-t0-face with your significant other on a daily basis, you?re more likely to be distracted by your physical attraction for one another, initially. If you?re interested in establishing a long-term relationship with someone who lives quite a distance from you, I?d advise you to follow the 4 tips listed below to enhance and maintain your long distance relationship.
1. Develop a 6month-1year plan to live within an hour (driving distance) from each other.
Unless you?re capable of funding monthly trips to visit one another, there should be a point in the relationship that you plan to live within close proximity of each other. Over a course of time, the distance can become financially and physically draining on the relationship. It?s important to form realistic goals of living closer to one another so that you and your significant other can work as a team to achieve the ?dream? (living closer to each other). You?ll know when it?s time to have this conversation during the relationship.
2. Spend at least 4? major holidays together per year.
Generally speaking, holidays are a ?big deal? to people. You and your significant other should pre-plan holiday time together at least 1-2 months prior to the holiday. It may allow you an opportunity to interact with each other?s family and close friends.
3. Use technology to your advantage.
There are far too many tools you can use to see your significant other from a distance. Video chat services such as Oovoo, Skype and FaceTime are extremely popular and are also available for your mobile devices. Video chatting will never replace the physical touch of your significant other, but it?s certainly a great supplement until you guys meet again.
4. Mail unsuspecting ?forget me nots? to your lover.
Throughout the course of your relationship, there should be ?insiders? (jokes/shared thoughts) that are kept between you and your significant other. Actress Tisha Campbell-Martin and her husband Duane Martin shared an intimate ?insider? on national television when they announced they mail leaves to one another when they are apart. The leaves are symbolic of a conversation they?d had regarding the fall. You and I have no idea why leaves are special to them,? but ?insiders? are not for everyone to know nor understand. It?s important to show that you value each other?s time and thoughts by sending each other special things pertaining to the relationship.
