Ex-Gov. Barbour 'very comfortable' with pardons

(AP) ? Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said Friday he's "very comfortable" with his decision to grant pardons or other clemency to more than 200 people, including convicted killers, in his last days in office.

Barbour said Friday during his first interview on the pardons that nearly 190 of the people who got pardons or other reprieves had already been released from prison before his actions. Only 10, he said, have been or will be fully released from prison.

Barbour said he's "fully confident the pardons and other clemency I have given are all valid."

He said it's a tradition in Mississippi for governors to free the trusties who worked at the Governor's Mansion. Four inmates freed this past weekend are convicted killers who worked as trusties.

And the former governor said he's not concerned that the freed trusties might harm anyone. "I have absolute confidence, so much confidence, that I'd let my grandchildren play with these five men," the Republican said.

He said he regretted he did not more quickly explain that most of the people who received clemency were already out of prison and some had been for years.

"Let's get the facts straight. Of the 215 who received clemency, 189 were not let out of jail. They were already out of jail," he said.

Businesslike in tone, but chafing at repeated questions about whether he thought the pardoned killers might commit other crimes, Barbour said Mississippians are mostly Christian people.

"I believe in second chances and I try hard to be forgiving," he said. "I am very comfortable and totally at peace with these pardons."

Barbour said he didn't anticipate the pardons would become centered on politics, though he expected some backlash.

"What I didn't think was that politicians would go out and tell the public we let 200 people out of the penitentiary. I didn't anticipate this would be all about politics," said Barbour, who left office earlier this week.

Attorney General Jim Hood, the only Democrat remaining in statewide elected office in Mississippi, denounced Barbour's actions as "shameful" and possibly unconstitutional. Hood went to court Wednesday to seek a halt to the releases, saying his investigation showed some of the inmates hadn't completed a constitutionally required notification to the public in areas where their crimes were committed.

Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green ordered that the release of 21 inmates be put on hold until it could be determined they met the requirements.

Authorities say three former Governor's Mansion trusties who were pardoned in Haley Barbour's final days as governor have called to check in with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Corrections spokeswoman Suzanne Singletary said convicted killers Anthony McCray and Charles Hooker, as well as convicted robber Nathan Kern, called corrections officials Friday.

Corrections officials have not yet heard from David Gatlin and Joseph Ozment, both convicted killers.

On Friday, Barbour said some of the same Mississippi politicians who attacked him had also asked him to pardon people.

He charged that Hood didn't object when Barbour's predecessor, Democrat Ronnie Musgrove, released convicted killers who worked at the Governor's Mansion.

Barbour said his father died when he was 2 years old. And when his grandfather, a judge, became disabled, an inmate was assigned to help him.

"I watched the power of a second chance and what it did for Leon Turner," he said.

Barbour often evoked his Christian faith as he talked with reporters at the Jackson-area law office where he now works.

"You do not want to take away hope and the opportunity for a second chance, particularly when you see what our religion says," he said.

Barbour said the corrections department picks inmates who work at the Governor's Mansion. Typically, they are men who committed crimes of passion.

Corrections officials assign them, he said, because they are not likely to commit another violent crime and make good workers.

Barbour, 64, is a former Republican National Committee chairman. He considered seeking the GOP nomination for president but decided in April 2011 that he would not do so.

He is now on the paid speakers' circuit and works for the law firm and for BGR, the Washington lobbying firm he founded two decades ago.

Colombian hostage's ex-husband sells film rights (AP)

BOGOTA, Colombia ? The former husband of Ingrid Betancourt is selling the film rights to his two books about the French-Colombian former hostage.

Juan Carlos Lecompte says U.S. producer Betty Kaplan plans to make a film called "In Search of Ingrid."

Lecompte and Betancourt separated shortly after a government raid freed her from more than six years in rebel captivity in July 2008. She was a former presidential candidate and the most famous hostage held by the guerrillas.

Lecompte did not give the price of the sale on Thursday, but says it was "an insignificant thing." He says it is based mostly on his first book, which he says is "a story of love" despite their later differences.

All-Purpose Sports Talk I (NFL, MLB, CFL, NCAA, NBA, Etc.)

Hey,

If Mods don't approve of this thread, just delete, but I'd love to find a better place than the regular OT Lounge to discuss NFL Football WITH SENS FANS, and I know some people (Shanny) are into the NFL here.

Will my Packers go undefeated in the regular season?

That's the only real question left to ask... I say yes.

Yes, but Week 16 and 17 could be tough if they sit their starters...

I have a feeling that they're going to play their starters pretty consistently, if only because they know they have the bye week in the 1st round of the playoffs pretty much sealed up.

Nothing good an come from 2 weeks of no game action (ie: sitting them out week 17 and not playing in the 1st round). Rust will kill you against a hungry team who have already had a taste of playoff football.

Also: totally approve of this thread. Well done.

Yah, it's a good point.

And the thread is much needed IMO. There's never any legitimate discussion in the OT threads, and I think this thread will heat up in the playoffs.

There's a rumour that Brett Favre is interested in playing for the Bears ...

If that happens, he needs to sign with the Lions so he can say he played with every team in the NFC North...

He'll sign a one-day contract in Detroit and retire (AGAIN) a Lion to complete the embarrassment of playing for Green Bay's 3 main rivals within a span of 2 years.

It's like he's purposely trying to piss off Packer fans. I've never seen a 1st ballot Hall of Famer completely disregard the team that made him like Farve seems hellbent on doing.

Honest to God, it would be similar to Alfie playing for the Leafs, and then rumours going around that he'll sign with the Habs.

It must be horrifying for Packers fans.

I wish I could just press fast forward till next season. Colts are useless without Manning, only benefit is that the Colts look like they will draft Andrew Luck this year.

Mostly every season there's a missed call in the end zone. Last year it was Calvin Johnson when he had the ball in his hands and they didn't count the touchdown. **** happens in every sport.

Edit: I didn't catch the Packers vs Giants game but those pictures don't do any justice as they don't show when his other knee hit the floor.

Ravens control their own fate, if they win out they get home field advantage and a bye week . They went to the post-season every year since 2008,though they have yet to play one playoff game in their own barn(7 games on the road).

My Titans likely control their own fate down the stretch for the last wildcard spot, but with tough games against the Texans and Saints things are looking dicey as of now. Everyone kind of assumed the worst after last season though, so anything more than 8-8 is gravy.

No, it's very relevant.

Both feet or knees have to be inbounds for a reception to be considered complete. One knee down only counts as "down" once a player has possession of the ball, and to have possession in the endzone without being out of bounds, you need either two feet or two knees down inbounds before "taking the knee" so to speak.

*EDIT*
Coughlin believes it was a TD, but I'm fairly sure the rule for TD completions is as I described above. I admit I could be wrong, though, but I'm like 90% sure the rule is two feet/knees in bounds.

I'm too lazy to look it up in the NFL rule book.

*EDIT 2*
Wait, I'm not that lazy:

"A forward pass is complete when a receiver clearly possesses the pass and touches the ground with both feet inbounds while in possession of the ball. If a receiver would have landed inbounds with both feet but is carried or pushed out of bounds while maintaining possession of the ball, pass is complete at the out-of-bounds spot. "
and
"An official shall declare the ball dead and the down ended:
(a) when a runner is contacted by a defensive player and touches the ground with any part of his body
other than his hands or feet. The ball is dead the instant the runner touches the ground. A runner
touching the ground with his hands or feet while in the grasp of an opponent may continue to
advance"
... However, for the receiver to become a runner, he must establish possession first by having two feet inbounds when making the catch.

Also: in 2008, they eliminated the "forceout rule"
"The forceout rule has been eliminated. A player who receives or intercepts a ball must land with both feet inbounds. This affords the receiver and defender equal opportunity to complete the play.

"We feel that with so many levels of judgment that go into the force-out call it creates a more consistent play when either you get your feet down for a complete pass or you do not," says co-chairman of the NFL Competition Committee Rick McKay."

Haha, after the Shaub & Leinert injuries, that's like going for the Banana in a Grapefruit vs. Orange race.

Go Banana!

*EDIT*
I'm a big Schaub & Johnson fan, I really enjoy watching the Texans when healthy. I wasn't trying to rub in the injuries, "Go Banana" was just the first thing I thought of, haha...

Clooney, Pitt kick off 2012 award season (AP)

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. ? George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and other red-carpet veterans joined some Hollywood newcomers in the Southern California desert this weekend to kick off the two-month-long movie award season at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

"When you're of age: drink," Clooney noted to the newbies at Saturday night's gala awards ceremony. "That's good advice to pretty much anybody."

Among those relative newcomers were Clooney's co-stars from the drama "The Descendants." "It is the first time we have dressed up all season," said actor Matthew Lillard. "We have a couple months to put on nice dresses and suits."

"Don't forget the shoes," injected actress Judy Greer. "Oh man, am I going to need a massage when the next two months are over."

Clooney, star of both "Descendants" and the drama "The Ides of March," was given the festival's "Chairman's Award" for acting, directing, producing and writing. "They gave me a gavel on the way in," he joked. "And I'm feeling like I might actually get protested now."

Among other honorees: actresses Michelle Williams ("My Week with Marilyn), Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer ("The Help") and Glenn Close ("Albert Nobbs").

Pitt was handed the Desert Palm Achievement Award for his performances in "Moneyball" and "The Tree of Life." Gary Oldman ("Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy") was dubbed International Star of the Year - the significance of which seemed to baffle its recipient.

"I am on an international stage, rather than a local one," Oldman noted. "I guess that is what that means?

Or perhaps he simply no longer needs a passport.

"Who designed the award?" Oldman asked. "Maybe I have just that and it gets me through customs."

As excited as Jolie was to support partner Pitt ? the latter walking with a cane, following a skiing injury ? home in LA was where their hearts were. "We are rushing back to the kids tonight," Jolie explained. "We have a birthday party in the morning with our daughter."

Next stops on the entertainment honors gauntlet include Wednesday's People's Choice, Thursday's Critic's Choice, Friday's Los Angeles Film Critics and Sunday's Golden Globes awards.

"I found that the last time I was (at the Golden Globes), it was a very fun day," said actor and director Kenneth Branagh, a Globe nominee for his performance in "My Week With Marilyn."

"The fact that it is a smallish room by comparison with some of the bigger awards rooms means that it has an intimacy and a kind of slightly raucous quality that is very, very carefully adhered to," Branagh explained. "I was very intoxicated."

How does our brain know what is a face and what's not?

Monday, January 9, 2012

Objects that resemble faces are everywhere. Whether it's New Hampshire's erstwhile granite "Old Man of the Mountain," or Jesus' face on a tortilla, our brains are adept at locating images that look like faces. However, the normal human brain is almost never fooled into thinking such objects actually are human faces.

"You can tell that it has some 'faceness' to it, but on the other hand, you're not misled into believing that it is a genuine face," says Pawan Sinha, professor of brain and cognitive sciences at MIT.

A new study from Sinha and his colleagues reveals the brain activity that underlies our ability to make that distinction. On the left side of the brain, the fusiform gyrus ? an area long associated with face recognition ? carefully calculates how "facelike" an image is. The right fusiform gyrus then appears to use that information to make a quick, categorical decision of whether the object is, indeed, a face.

This distribution of labor is one of the first known examples of the left and right sides of the brain taking on different roles in high-level visual-processing tasks, Sinha says, although hemispheric differences have been seen in other brain functions, most notably language and spatial perception.

Lead author of the paper, published Jan. 4 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, is Ming Meng, a former postdoc in Sinha's lab and now an assistant professor at Dartmouth College. Other authors are Tharian Cherian '09 and Gaurav Singal, who recently earned an MD from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology and is now a resident at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Face versus nonface

Many earlier studies have shown that neurons in the fusiform gyrus, located on the brain's underside, respond preferentially to faces. Sinha and his students set out to investigate how that brain region decides what is and is not a face, particularly in cases where an object greatly resembles a face.

To help them do that, the researchers created a continuum of images ranging from those that look nothing like faces to genuine faces. They found images that very closely resemble faces by examining photographs that machine vision systems had falsely tagged as faces. Human observers then rated how facelike each of the images were by doing a series of one-to-one comparisons; the results of those comparisons allowed the researchers to rank the images by how much they resembled a face.

The research team then used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to scan the brains of research subjects as they categorized the images. Unexpectedly, the scientists found different activity patterns on each side of the brain: On the right side, activation patterns within the fusiform gyrus remained quite consistent for all genuine face images, but changed dramatically for all nonface images, no matter how much they resembled a face. This suggests that the right side of the brain is involved in making the categorical declaration of whether an image is a face or not.

Meanwhile, in the analogous region on the left side of the brain, activity patterns changed gradually as images became more facelike, and there was no clear divide between faces and nonfaces. From this, the researchers concluded that the left side of the brain is ranking images on a scale of how facelike they are, but not assigning them to one category or another.

"From the computational perspective, one speculation one can make is that the left does the initial heavy lifting," Sinha says. "It tries to determine how facelike is a pattern, without making the final decision on whether I'm going to call it a face."

Key to the research was imaging-analysis technology that allowed the scientists to look at patterns of activity across the fusiform gyrus.

Timing is instructive

The researchers found that activation in the left side of the fusiform gyrus preceded that of the right side by a couple of seconds, supporting the hypothesis that the left side does its job first and then passes information on to the right side.

Sinha says that given the sluggishness of fMRI signals (which rely on blood-flow changes), the timing does not yet constitute definitive evidence, "but it's a very interesting possibility because it begins to tease apart this monolithic notion of face processing. It's now beginning to get at what the constituents are of that overall face-processing system."

The researchers hope to obtain more solid evidence of temporal relationships between the two hemispheres with studies using electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG), two technologies that offer a much more precise view of the timing of brain activity. They also hope to discover how and when the right and left sides of the fusiform gyrus develop these independent functions by studying blind children who have their sight restored at a young age. Many such children have been treated by Project Prakash, an effort initiated by Sinha to find and treat blind children in India.

Samsung SmartHome WiFi Washer and Dryer hands-on (video)

We've all needed to keep the laundry going while we're out and about. Samsung is looking to help with that and let us in on their plans at yesterday's presser. The WF457 washer and dryer set houses an 8-inch touchscreen, is WiFi-enabled and can be controlled from inside or outside of the home via the SmartHome app. With your smartphone or tablet, you can choose the cycle, duration and set-up notifications on your mobile device once the job is done. Neither are available as of yet, but rest assured, this will be a neat piece of tech you should consider. Want a demo? Head on to the gallery below and video.

After spending some time controlling a few eight second demo cycles, we were pretty impressed with the system as a whole. Amazingly enough, our load of towels was completely dry. The app worked well and stayed connected for the most part -- granted, we were in the midst of the CES WiFi crossfire. We did encounter some issues when controlling the dryer with a smartphone and then interacting with the appliance's touchscreen. The SmartHome tech seemed to only like to take orders from one source at a time. Other than that, everything went off without a hitch and the phone notification feature is quite a nice touch. Either way, not having to get up to fluff those 400-thread-count sheets is a luxury we can all enjoy in some capacity.
