Space station trio gets back down to Earth

After half a year living on the International Space Station, three astronauts safely returned to Earth on Sunday aboard a Russian-built space capsule.

The Soyuz spacecraft landed in the Central Asian steppes of Kazakhstan at 4:14 a.m. ET, returning NASA astronaut Don Pettit, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers to their home planet.

"Everything is good, we feel great," Kononenko radioed Russia's Mission Control Center just before landing.

The spacefliers undocked from the space station several hours earlier in their Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft to begin the journey home. They landed upright under a blue sky dotted with some white clouds in Kazakhstan, where the local time was Sunday afternoon. Live video tracked the Soyuz's descent at the end of its parachute, right down to the ground.

Veterans return from frontier
Pettit, Kononenko and Kuipers arrived at the orbiting outpost in December 2011. All three had flown previous missions to the space station, making them a crew of veteran spacefliers.

In a blog post describing his final day in space, Pettit reflected on the impact of his months-long mission, and encouraged humanity to keep pushing the boundaries of space exploration.

"On Earth, the frontiers opened slowly," Pettit wrote. "The technology of sailing was known and advanced for over a thousand years before the Earth was circumnavigated. Such bold acts require the technology, the will, and the audacity to explore. Sometimes you have one, but not the others. I only hope that my small efforts here, perhaps adding one grain of sand to the beach of knowledge, will help enable a generation of people in the future to call space 'home.'" [Landing Photos: Soyuz Capsule Returns 3 Astronauts Home]

Throughout their mission, Pettit and Kuipers shared stunning photos of Earth from space with the public through Twitter and the Flickr photo-sharing site. Pettit also regularly updated his blog with accounts of his experiences on the space station, including several poems in tribute to life in space.

Pettit kept a journal as a fun way to document his scientific activities on the orbiting outpost. For instance, Pettit wrote blog updates using the persona of a zucchini plant when he experimented with growing different kinds of plants in microgravity.

On Friday, Pettit wrote a poem called "Last Day in Space," touching upon his memories of the mission, the experiences that moved him, and his anticipation over seeing his wife and children again soon.

Milestone mission
Pettit, Kononenko and Kuipers made up half of the station's Expedition 31 crew. During their stay at the orbiting laboratory, the spacefliers rolled out the welcome mat for the first commercial spacecraft to visit the station.

SpaceX's unmanned Dragon capsule was launched to the International Space Station on a test flight to demonstrate the spacecraft's ability to carry cargo to and from low-Earth orbit. As Dragon approached the station, Pettit and Kuipers used the outpost's robotic arm to pluck it from space and manually park it to the complex.

The successful test flight lays the groundwork for NASA to use commercial spaceships to ferry cargo ? and one day, astronauts ? to the space station. SpaceX holds a $1.6 billion contract with the agency for 12 unmanned cargo delivery flights.

Kononenko served as commander of Expedition 31 during his stay, but passed the torch to fellow Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka during a change-of-command ceremony Saturday.

The departure of Pettit, Kononenko and Kuipers leaves only three residents occupying the space station until three new crewmembers launch to the complex on July 14. Padalka, NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Revin will remain aboard the orbiting outpost until September.

Russian space station flight controllers radioed Padalka and his Expedition 32 crew after Sunday's landing to let the spacefliers know their comrades were back on Earth and in good health.

"Good to hear," Padalka radioed back. "Another mission completed."

Selection committee to select teams for top 6 bowl games

Bill Hancock elaborated more on how the new playoff system will work. Apparently not just the top 4 teams will be selected, but 12 teams will be placed into the top 6 bowls. As for the timing of the games, it looks like the "Big 6" bowl games will be played on New Year's Eve and New Year's day while the new championship game will be played about a week after that.

Boise State's Kurt Felix named MWC athlete of the year

I'm a little unclear in this press release. Is this just for Track and Field? Felix will be competing in the Olympics for his home country of Grenada.

Boise State alumnus Jarred Rome makes Olympics in the discus

It will be his second Olympics. He competed back in 2004 for team USA. It's nice to have some Treasure Valley and Boise State rooting interests in the Olympics again.

The Idaho Statesman is hiring

It doesn't specify, but I bet it comes with a press pass!

We say goodbye to Munson

He was a good man who also loved Boise State. He came to OBNUG in September 2009 and in the past few years racked up over 9,000+ comments. I'm sure he lived his life with the same passion. He'll be missed. Our prayers are with his family and friends.

Google Pumps Up Jelly Bean?s Face Unlock Feature With A New ?Liveness Check?

livenesscheckBack when Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was first introduced in Hong Kong last year plenty of us jaded tech folk took a shine to its new Face Unlock feature, which allows users to unlock their devices with their front-facing cameras. Of course, we now know that it isn?t terribly secure ? a picture of your face was apparently good enough to fool it ? but Google seems to have made Face Unlock just a bit more secure in their early Jelly Bean release.

'Awkward' Cast Previews 'Shocking' Season Two Premiere

'Everything is still very fresh, very prevalent,' star Beau Mirchoff tells MTV News about premiere, airing tonight (June 28) on MTV.
By Jocelyn Vena

"Awkward" castmembers Brett Davern, Molly Tarlov and Beau Mirchoff
Photo:

If you thought things couldn't get any more — dare we say it — "Awkward" for Jenna on the hit MTV comedy of the same name, you should brace yourself for what's to come in season two.

After Jenna (played by Ashley Rickards) learned who wrote the infamous letter in season one that led many of her school peers to think she tried to commit suicide, she's now dealing with the aftermath at home. Oh yeah, she's also in the middle of a bit of a love triangle between new boy, Jake, and old beau, Matty.

And given the fast pace of tonight's (June 28) season premiere, expect her family and relationship drama to move along at a very rapid speed. "Season two takes place two weeks after the finale of season one, so everything is still very fresh, very prevalent," Beau Mirchoff, who plays Matty, explained to MTV News. "The love triangle hasn't been resolved, Sadie is as villainous as ever, all of her colors have shown. Jenna Hamilton has a lot of decisions to be made. I think the fans are going to love it."

Molly Tarlov, who plays aforementioned mean girl Sadie, explained that if you thought you were going to get lulled into Jenna's life drama this season, think again. "We really start season two in the first episode just full force into it. The story moves along so quickly in the first episode," she said. "There's a lot of stuff that I will not just say surprising, I will say absolutely shocking, and is gonna, if you watch the first episode, is going to be really shocking to you."

[Warning: Spoiler ahead!]

In addition to having to keep her love life in check, Jenna is also reeling from the news that her mother was the one who wrote the letter that forever changed her life. And that news will only make things harder for her at home as her mom tries to make it up to her, albeit not always in the most productive ways.

"There's a lot of, 'Anywhere Jenna Hamilton goes, awkwardness is gonna follow,' and that is very true with the letter as well," teased Brett Davern, who stars as Jake. "I think it's gonna cause some problems at home for her and within her family. And so, not only is her drama surrounding her school life, with us, the love triangle and all her friends and stuff, but also her at-home drama, I think, increases in season two as well."

Mirchoff added, "It doesn't become known to Matty and Jake. [They] possibly find out about it later in the season, but not right away."

Don't miss the season two premiere of "Awkward," tonight (June 28) at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT (9:30 Central) on MTV!

37 Years Ago Today, Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak Invented Apple

37 Years Ago Today, Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak Invented Apple37 Years Ago Today, Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak Invented Apple

A lot of people are getting excited that today is the iPhone?s fifth birthday, ourselves included, but it?s also arguably an even important anniversary: it marks the day that Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak first got together and decided to change the world. Today is the day when two great minds first conceived not only Apple, but the PC.

On Sunday, June 29th, 1975, Steve Wozniak took a computer he hobbled together out of an old Motorola 6800 CPU and a collection of disjointed parts that he had soldered onto a motherboard, booted it up, and showed his good friend Steve Jobs what would end up being the prototype for the Apple I, the world?s first consumer-marketed, assembled personal computer.

Apple, Inc. as a company wouldn?t be officially formed until April 1, 1976. Likewise, the Apple I wouldn?t go on sale until April 11, almost a year later. So today isn?t Apple?s birthday, or even the Apple I?s birthday.

But that moment when Steve Wozniak got the collection of parts he?d been working on to finally boot up long enough that he could show them to Steve Jobs was the moment of conception not just for Apple, but for everything that followed, including the Mac, the iPhone, the iPad and pretty much the entire world of consumer tech.

If you?d like to know more about what happened thirty-seven years ago today, Walter Isaacson?s official biography of Steve Jobs has the whole story , starting in Chapter Five.

Texas Rangers investigate shooting of teen lesbian couple - US News

A makeshift memorial was set up near the site in Portland, Tex., where a couple found Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, after they were shot last week.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

?

Updated at 6:45 p.m. ET: The father of a young woman who was shot along with her girlfriend last week in a South Texas park is mourning the loss of his ?guardian angel,? telling a local television station that ?justice will be served? in the case.

Mario Olgin?s daughter, Mollie, 19, and her girlfriend, Mary Kristene Chapa, were found in a grassy area of the park by a couple Saturday morning with gunshot wounds to the head, Portland, Texas, Police Chief Randy Wright has said. Olgin, originally from nearby Ingleside but recently living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was rushed to an area hospital where she is making an ?amazing? recovery in the intensive care unit, her brother told NBC Latino.

The couple had planned to spend some time in the park before going to see a movie, Olgin told kiiitv.com on Tuesday. When his daughter, a first-year college student who wanted to become a psychologist, didn?t show up for work on Saturday, Olgin said he knew something was wrong.

?It was not like Mollie. ? If she had some place to be she was going to be there,? he said. ?I immediately had bad feelings (about) it.?

Wright said police had recovered a bullet casing from a large-caliber gun at the scene, leading investigators to believe the shootings occurred where the pair was found, but they haven?t found the weapon. Two witnesses said they heard what could have been gunshots or firecrackers just before midnight last Friday but did not report it at the time, he said.

A motive had not been established, he said in the statement.

"Information from family and friends indicates that Mollie and Mary were engaged in a same-sex relationship. However, there is no current evidence to indicate the attacks were motivated by that relationship," he said.

Wright told msnbc.com on Monday that: ?It appears as if ? this was not just a random attack but that?s something that we really have to develop over time.?

Police are investigating the shooting of two teenage girls in a same-sex relationship in a small Texas community along the Gulf of Mexico. KRIS reporter Lindsay Curtis has the story.

Because of her medical condition, Chapa has not been formally interviewed about what happened, he said.

Chapa?s brother, Hilario, said that his sister was making physical progress on the right side of her body but doctors were awaiting a response from the left. She was able to communicate via sign language.

?The doctors say it?s too early, no one is using the word ?paralyzed,?? he told NBC Latino. ?They say we should be so happy with her progress after three or four days. She?s very strong. She survived a very tough ordeal but her recovery is coming in strides and ?impressing everybody.?

He was hesitant to share many details about the search for a suspect.

?We don?t know who did this to her, she hasn?t given us a name,? he said. ?We?re under the impression she doesn?t know who did it. We don?t know if it?s a hate crime.?

Friends reel from shooting of teen lesbian couple in Texas

The Texas Rangers have joined the investigation, which is being led by the Portland Police.

?We offered our assistance and they accepted and we have been actively involved in the investigation since Sunday," Tom Vinger, spokesman for Texas Department of Public Safety, wrote to msnbc.com in an email.

The park, a nature area with some parts overgrown and no lights, was often frequented by visitors during the day, but not at night. It is located along a bluff overlooking a bay, Wright said, with some homes situated nearby.

Rainbow ribbons, messages, flowers and cut-out hearts were left near the site in Portland, Tex., where a couple found Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18, after they were shot.

?We?re not really sure how they got to the point that they were found,? he said. ?It is a scenic overlook with a wooden deck and there is a place at the edge of the deck where you can actually go down a very steep incline into a grassy area that leads down to the shoreline, and that?s where they were found.?

The crime rate is low in Portland, north of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico, Wright said. The last homicide occurred two years ago.

The couple?s friends and well-wishers placed rainbow ribbons, goodbye messages, flowers and cut-out hearts on Sunday around the site where Olgin and Chapa were found. On Friday, a candlelight vigil and walk will be held for them.

Frank Reyna, a 19-year-old university student, said he grew up with Chapa and met Olgin his sophomore year of high school. He described Chapa as an athlete who played softball, and said Olgin, a student at a nearby university, was focused on academics but also was a big joker. He last saw them together at a local coffee shop in May, which was the first time he saw them out as a couple.

?It?s something that I think all of us are going to carry with us for a while,? Reyna told msnbc.com. ?It?s going to take a while to get past this, the idea that there is somebody still out there that did this to these two amazing, beautiful people, and that they?re walking free right now.?

Friends said the pair had been together since mid-February.

The couple?s relationship ?was a readily accepted thing,? Reyna added, and was not what their friends focused on.

?We focused on their personalities and how they got along with everybody else ? their kindheartedness and their ability to just make other people smile and make each other smile,? he said. ?We didn?t care ? what they were, it?s who they were.?

Jillian Manuel, 20, who used to work with Olgin, said it was hard to return to the park on the weekend knowing what had happened there. She went to help create the makeshift memorial, where friends shared stories and tears, and to check the scene, where she recalled the difficulty of watching Olgin?s car get towed.

?We?re ? hoping to kind of just remember Molly, remember her and just share our memories,? Manuel said of their planned vigil. ?And then ? send off prayers for Christine and just celebrate them.?

The family will hold a memorial on Friday before the candlelight vigil and walk. Olgin welcomed the outpouring of support in the wake of his daughter?s death.

?She was happy,? he told kiiitv.com. ?She didn?t need for her life to end the way it did. Justice will be served.?

Mobile Application Development is one of the fastest growing ...

It is amazing what difference cell phones have made to our lives. The lifestyles of younger people have especially changed. The majority of school children have at some time owned and operated a cell phone. Young people tend to be more inclined to purchase new promotional packages. Additionally they tend to be very experienced with the latest applications. As a lot of kids and students don?t have a fixed income they rely on their parents to pay their mobile bill. It is no surprise that a lot of the marketing of applications is focused on younger people. The game console industry has additionally exploded in recent years. As the processing power of mobile phones have improved, it was only a matter of time before the demand for better games and applications would skyrocket.

With the smart phone industry booming, it seems that there is a cell phone application for almost everything we all do. Mobile phones were initially only ideal for phone conversation and text messages. Nowadays most phones are capable of much more, including sending multimedia messages and accessing the internet. A lot of the modern applications happen to be made possible using the developments in a few areas of cell phone technology like 3G, 4G, Wap, Wifi and GPRS. 3G makes it easy to access the internet from virtually anywhere in the world. In some countries it is also still cheaper than fixed line broadband.

In a recent consumer survey it?s interesting to notice what types of applications are growing in appeal.
Nearly all cell phone users in the first world countries, use mobile phone applications for communication, entertainment and emergency assistance. Communication applications would include texts and chats.

There are however users who have a higher mobile expenditure, who use transaction orientated, location orientated and content delivery applications. Content delivery includes online search applications, e-mails and updates. Transaction based applications allows you to do things like online banking, purchasing and booking.
