Alibaba claims Google leaned on Acer to cancel launch of CloudMobile with Aliyun in China

Just yesterday Acer was getting ready to unleash its CloudMobile smartphone on the Chinese public sporting an equally local (and equally not Android) Aliyun operating system. According to Reuters, however, when journalists turned up for the launch event today, an Alibaba (who make Aliyun) spokesperson told them the launch had been cancelled, before later releasing a statement saying Acer had received pressure from Google to pull the launch. The competing OS manufacturer claims that the Acer was told product collaborations and Android authorization would cease if the product was released. So far Google has declined to comment, but if true, represents some significant strong arming, in what is clearly a significant market. We have reached out to Google for comment ourselves. More as we know it.

iPhone 5: Everything to Know About Apple’s Launch Day

Everything Apple is getting longer and thinner.

The iPhone 5, announced earlier today and set to ship on Sept. 21, has a 4-inch Retina screen, giving it space for an extra row of apps. The new iPod Touch has the same new display. And the iPod Nano has stretched out to the point that is looks like a shrunken iPhone. If we?re to trust the demos, those beefed up screens are meant for horizontal video and games (and maybe some regular old productivity apps too).

The new iPhone display, with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio, is packed with 326 pixels per inch (the overall size is 1136 x 640). It?s not just bigger and sharper, though?it?s also more accurate to your touch, a feat Apple achieved by removing a layer from previous iPhones and integrating the touch sensors into the display. Apple CEO Tim Cook explained the rationale behind the new size in a jab likely aimed at Samsung and other giant-phone manufacturers: ?It?s because of your hand?it should fit there.?

Behind that screen you?ll find just 7.6 mm of phone. But Apple never makes something thinner and lighter without some inverse-proportion work to make the device more powerful. This time, it replaces the A5 processor with the A6, whose CPU and graphics are twice as fast despite taking up 22 percent less space.

As for other improvements: Apple claims improved battery life?225 hours of standby use and 8 hours of 3G talk time. There?s a single radio chip, and another for voice and data. The ?dynamic antenna? allows connections at speeds up to 150 mbps. A five-magnet transducer improves audio, giving listeners access to a wider band of spectrum than before, and three microphones improve in-going audio, helping Siri to better hear barked commands.

The camera, too, gains power with the latest phone and performs better in low light. Also, the iPhone 5?s camera can automatically lace together adjacent photos to create huge panoramas, take photos while shooting video, and send photos to shared Photo Streams stored in the iCloud.

Nothing too surprising comes in the realm of apps; Apple announced the majority of iOS 6 additions in June at the Worldwide Developers Conference. The phone?s look isn?t all that surprising either, since it basically matches the design of the supposedly leaked versions. Both colors of the iPhone 5 are subtly two-tone, with the black one combining shiny glass black and a matte finish back, while the white one combines shiny and brushed aluminum in back.

Perhaps the biggest change in how you actually interact with the phone is the new connector, called Lightning (which goes along with Thunderbolt in a much-too-cute way). The eight-signal interface is much smaller than the 30-pin connector Apple has used since 2003. It?s also reversible, so you don?t have to look for the tiny icon on one side before plugging it in. (If you still want to use your old 30-pin connector, you can buy an adapter. Selling apadters seems to be Apple?s favorite reason to add new interfaces besides the interfaces themselves.)

The iPhone 5 reveal, plus a look at the new iTunes (more minimalist design, a few new features but nothing to write home about), wasn?t enough for Apple. So the company also rebooted its line of iPods (except the classic version?no mention of it). The iPod Touch remains essentially a phoneless iPhone, gaining the iPhone 5?s new display, a better camera, longer battery life, and losing weight. And the Nano grows from a stout square to become a mini iPhone Touch (minus many of the features, of course), with the added ability to pause radio and stream audio via Bluetooth. The iPod Touch?available in five different colors, each with a wrist-strap?launches in October. So does the iPod Nano, available in seven colors, and a new line of headphones (not standard with the phone) called, incredibly, EarPods.

Pricing for the iPhone 5 is the same as for the 4S. With a contract, it costs $199 for 16 GB, $299 for 32 GB, and $399 for 64 GB. The store will allow pre-orders starting September 14, and the phone will begin shipping September 21 in some countries, followed by more on the 28th, and a total of 100 by December. Meanwhile, iOS 6 launches as a free upgrade September 19.

Oh, and if you?re wondering how the nearly two-hour event ended, two words: Foo Fighters.

Jillian Jensen Breaks Down, Impresses on The X Factor

Darn you, The X Factor. You got us.

Sometimes, even when we're know we're being emotionally manipulated, we can't help but give in to the waterworks. Case in point from last night's season two premiere of The X Factor:

Jillian Jensen, a young woman whose history of being bullied gave her a clear connection to Demi Lovato. Watch Jensen give it her all during her initial audition and then break down in the arms of this new judge:

Other contestants that stood out from the premiere:

  • Reed Deming, a 13-year old with shaggy, Justin Bieber-like hair.
  • Paige Thomas, a favorite of L.A. Reid's.
  • Jennel Garcia, a young rocker who closed the show on a very positive note.

Bravo turning movie 'Heathers' into a TV series

Everett Collection

Christian Slater and Winona Ryder in "Heathers."

By Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter

Bravo is continuing its push into original scripted programming, adding five dramas into its development pipeline including a reboot of 1980s cult movie "Heathers."

The NBCUniversal-owned network, as part of its goal to have original scripted fare on the air next year, is redeveloping "Heathers," the 1988 Winona Ryder and Christian Slater feature that "The Big C's" Jenny Bicks and Sony Pictures Television initially sold to Fox three years ago.

In the updated take, "Heathers" picks up 20 years later, with Veronica (Ryder's character) returning home to Sherwood with her teenage daughter, who must contend with the next generation of mean girls: the Ashleys: the daughters of the surviving Heathers.

STORY: Bravo Redeveloping ABC's 'Joneses' Remake From 'Life Unexpected's' Liz Tigelaar

Bicks -- whose "The Big C" will end its four-season run next year with four hourlong episodes -- will write and executive produce alongside Mark Rizzo ("The Man Date") for SPT; executive producing for Lakeshore Entertainment -- who was behind the 2009 incarnation -- are Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi.

"Through our growing slate of scripted development, we plan to build upon the success of our award-winning unscripted programming, accessing and exploring new worlds and characters while still engaging the same affluent and pop culture savvy audience that watches the 'Real Housewives' and 'Top Chef,'" said Andrew Wang,?vice-president of?scripted development and production at Bravo.? "We're excited to partner with such high-caliber talent in developing TV that pushes boundaries conceptually and thematically while still telling a fun story in the way that our audiences have come to expect from us."

The?"Heathers"?effort comes a month after Bravo opted to?redevelop?"The Joneses," itself a remake of the?Demi Moore?and?David Duchovny?feature that?"Life Unexpected's"?Liz Tigelaar?sold to ABC last year.

"Apartment"?(working title), from Universal Television, revolves around two twentysomething siblings who, after their mother's death, unexpectedly inherit the love nest where she had an 18-year affair. After learning that she wasn't the mother they thought she was, the siblings rent her Upper West Side apartment to people who want a private space to have their own extra-marital affairs.

"Gossip Girl's"?Jessica Queller?will write and executive produce the drama alongside Dark Toy Entertainment's?Karey Burke?and?Todd Holland?("Go On").

"The Darlings"?(working title) hails from Fox Television Studios and is based on the novel by Christina Alger, revolving around a high-society family on Manhattan's Upper East Side that's pulled into a financial scandal after a business partner's Ponzi scheme unravels, driving him to suicide and exposing the family (and company's) secrets.

"Lights Out's"?Stu Zicherman?will write and executive produce alongside?Sarah Condon ("Bored to Death").

STORY: Bravo Follows Upfront Orders With Six More Series in Development

"All American Girl"?(working title), also hails from Fox Television Studios, and is based on Black List writer?Jenni Ross' mother's stint as fashion editor at?Seventeen?magazine in the 1970s. The effort will span three decades and revolve around three women who all work at the magazine? All American Girl?and track the changing points of view of women in the workplace and feminism.

(AP) ? A mob enraged by a film ridiculing Islam's prophet killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans in a fiery attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. President Barack Obama strongly condemned the violence, vowed Wednesday to bring the killers to justice and tightened security at diplomatic posts around the world.

The attack that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens ? the first U.S. diplomat to die in the line of duty since 1979 ? came on Tuesday's 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist strike and presented a new foreign policy crisis for the United States in a region trying to recover from months of upheaval.

Libya's interim president, Mohammed el-Megarif, apologized for what he called the "cowardly" assault on the consulate, which also killed several Libyan security guards in the eastern city. Violence also flared in Egypt, where crowds protesting the film at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo climbed its walls and tore down an American flag, which they replaced briefly with a black, Islamist flag.

The protests weree touched off by an obscure movie made in the United States by a filmmaker who calls Islam a "cancer." Video excerpts posted on YouTube depict the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a madman in an overtly ridiculing way, showing him having sex and calling for massacres.

Details of the attack in Benghazi were still emerging Wednesday. Stevens, 52, died as he and a group of embassy employees went to the consulate to try to evacuate staff when hundreds of people attacked with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

By the end of the assault, much of the building was burned out and trashed.

Dr. Ziad Abu Zeid, who treated Stevens, told The Associated Press that he died of asphyxiation, apparently from smoke. In a sign of the chaos during the attack, Stevens was brought by Libyans to the Benghazi Medical Center with no other Americans, and no one at the facility knew who he was, Abu Zeid said.

Stevens was practically dead when he arrived before 1 a.m. Wednesday, and "we tried to revive him for an hour and a half, but with no success," Abu Zeid said. The ambassador was bleeding in his stomach because of the asphyxiation but had no other injuries, he said.

The State Department identified one of the other Americans killed as Sean Smith, a foreign service information management officer. The identities of the others were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

"I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi," Obama said in Washington, adding the four Americans "exemplified America's commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe."

Obama ordered increased security to protect American diplomatic personnel around world.

"Make no mistake we will work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people," he said.

Obama added: "We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, but there is absolutely no justification for this type of senseless violence, none."

El-Megarif offered his condolences to the U.S. and also vowed to bring the culprits to justice and maintain his country's close relations with Washington.

"We extend our apology to America, the American people and the whole world," el-Megarif said.

The brazen assaults ? the first on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Libya and Egypt ? were signs of the lawlessness that has taken hold in Libya and Egypt after revolutions ousted their autocratic secular regimes and upended the tightly controlled police state in both countries.

Islamists, who were long repressed under the previous regimes, have emerged as a powerful force and made up the bulk of the protesters in both countries.

Moreover, security in both countries has broken down. Egypt's police, a once hated force blamed for massive human rights abuses, have yet to fully take back the streets after Hosni Mubarak's ouster in February 2011.

On Tuesday in Cairo, riot police stood by the embassy's walls but continued to allow protesters to climb them for several hours. The protesters, however, appeared to intentionally stick to certain limits: A few entered the embassy grounds to remove the flags and come back, but otherwise the chanting youth stayed on top of the walls without storming the compound or damaging property.

The uproar over the film also poses a new test for Egypt's Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi, who has yet to condemn the riot outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo or say anything about the offending film.

In Libya, central government control is weak, arms are ubiquitous and militias are pervasive. The consulate in Benghazi, Libya's second largest city, is a one-story villa in a large garden located in an upscale neighborhood. By the end of Tuesday night's attack, much of the building was black and smoldering. Libyans wandered freely around the burned-out building, taking photos of rooms where furniture was covered in soot and overturned.

The violence raised worries that further protests could break out around the Muslim world as knowledge of the anti-Islam movie spread.

About 50 protesters burned American flags outside the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia's capital Wednesday but were kept away from the building by reinforced security. And in Gaza City, dozens of protesters carrying swords, axes and black flags chanted "Shame on everyone who insults the prophet." The rally was organized by supporters of a militant group aligned with the ruling Hamas movement.

Afghanistan's government sought to avert an outbreak of protests. President Hamid Karzai condemned the movie, which he describes as "inhuman and insulting." Authorities also temporarily shut down access to YouTube, the video-sharing site where excerpts of the movie were posted, said Aimal Marjan, general director of Information Technology at the Ministry of Communications.

Ultraconservative Islamists also were suspected of being behind the Benghazi attack. Advocating a strict interpretation of Islam, they have bulldozed Sufi shrines and mosques that house tombs in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and other cities, including ancient sites dating back to 5,000 years ago.

Heavily armed, ultraconservative groups like Ansar al-Shariah, or Supporters of Shariah, have claimed responsibility for the attacks on the shrines, declaring Sufi practices as "heretical."

Libya has been also hit by a series of recent attacks that served as evidence of the deep and persistent security vacuum in the country after the fall of Moammar Gadhafi's regime, which was ousted by rebels backed by a NATO air campaign. Many Libyans believe that unrest in their country is in part the work of Gadhafi's loyalists who want to undermine efforts to rebuild the country after last year's ruinous civil war.

Stevens was a career diplomat who spoke Arabic and French and had already served two tours in Libya, including running the office in Benghazi during the revolt against Gadhafi. He was confirmed as ambassador to Libya by the Senate earlier this year.

Before Tuesday, five U.S. ambassadors had been killed in the line of duty, the last being Adolph Dubs in Afghanistan in 1979, according to the State Department.

The two-hour movie that sparked the protests, titled "Innocence of Muslims," came to attention in Egypt after its trailer was dubbed into Arabic and posted on YouTube.

A man identifying himself as Sam Bacile, a 56-year-old California real estate developer, said he wrote, produced and directed the movie.

He told the AP he was an Israeli Jew and an American citizen. But Israeli officials said they had not heard of Bacile and there was no record of him being a citizen. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not permitted to share personal information with the media.

Separately, the film was being promoted by an extreme anti-Muslim Egyptian Christian campaigner in the United States.

Moreno Valley Chase Bank Robbery: Gunman Leaves Object Resembling Explosive Device (VIDEO)

MORENO VALLEY, Calif. ? Bomb squad experts concluded Tuesday that the suspicious box an armed bank robber left at a Moreno Valley bank was a fake bomb.

The robbery occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. at a Chase branch in Moreno Valley when two bank employees were arriving to work. The man, who wore a military-type mask with cargo pants and black boots, forced the employees inside the bank and demanded cash, said Deputy Albert Martinez of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The man stole an undisclosed sum of money and fled after taking an employee's vehicle that was later found two blocks away, Martinez said.

The suspect left behind an object on a coffee table that resembled an explosive device, but it was determined that it was not an explosive, Cpl. Angel Ramos said.

No arrests have been made and no injuries have been reported.

Last week, two men abducted the manager of an East Los Angeles bank and strapped what turned out to be a fake bomb to her in a scheme to rob a Bank of America branch.

Martinez said it's not known if the two robberies are connected.
